Birth14 Mar 1834 John Chesterfield Smyth was born on 14 Mar 1834.4
Marriage10 Aug 1862 He married Adaline Missouri Logan, daughter of Caleb Logan and Mary "Polly" Dunn, on 10 Aug 1862 in Washington County, Virginia.2,5
Cens-187030 Sep 1870  In 1870 John "Chesterfield", Adaline and their first three children (William D. 7, Henderson 3, and D.L. 2) were recorded with John's parents near Glade Spring, Virginia.6
Cens-18702 Oct 1870  Oddly, a few days later, John and Adaline were enumerated a second time, as were his parents. This time they were all listed in the Third District (Saltville), and John was listed as the head of his own household. John and Adaline's children were enumerated as William 7, Steward 4, Jane 2, and Robert one. It is interesting that the ages and names vary slightly from the Glade Spring enumeration. Also, the baby Robert who was born in July 1870 should not have been listed at all since he was born after the official June 1 census date. Jane Moffett Dunn appears to have been listed with John and Adaline on this second enumeration, although she was listed as Jane Smith. The reason for this alternate enumeration is not clear, but the 1870 census for Washington County is known to have been poorly enumerated.7
Cens-188018 Jun 1880 John and Adaline were recorded in the Saltville District in 1880. John's parents were again part of the household which also included Lydia Smyth [John's cousin; her parents were both deceased] and John and Adaline's five children: William, Stuart, Leanna, Robert and Mary.3
Robert died at age 24 in 1895; Mary married the same year. Henderson "Stuart" married in 1896 and left Washington Co. to practice medicine among the coal miners of rural Virginia. William and Leanna did not marry.8
Death12 Dec 1908 John died on 12 Dec 1908 at age 74.9,1
Burial He was buried at Smyth's Chapel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.9,4
