Cens-186029 Jun 1860  Francis made his home with his parents where he was enumerated on the 1860 census.8 
Cens-18706 Oct 1870  By 1870 his mother was deceased, but Francis continued to live with his widowed father. He was listed on that years census as a 47 year old tradesman who owned land valued at $1,000.9 
Legatee20 Jan 1872  Tobias Smyth wrote his will in early 1872 and died a few days later. Tobias did not leave Francis a specific share of his estate but stipulated that Francis was to have "a peaceable and comfortable entertainment" with his sisters Elizabeth and Katherine.3 
Cens-18801880  However Francis did not stay with his sisters Elizabeth and Nancy, but settled instead with his sister Jane who had married Fulton Kelly a few years earlier.10 
Cens-190021 Jun 1900 By 1900 both Jane and Fulton were deceased. Frank then lived with his niece Fanny Smyth Clark and her husband, William Clark near Glade Spring Virginia. He was 77 years old. It was most likely Fanny and William who two years later, upon Frank's death, erected a stone on his grave that said "Uncle Frank". Fanny (Isabella Frances Smyth Clark) had grown up in her grandfather's household where her Uncle Frank had lived for most of his life.11

Burial He was buried at Smyth's Chapel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.1
