Research Comment:

Nellie's birth may have been inadvertantly recorded in the Smyth County Register of Births as William G., since a child of that name is recorded as having been born to Mathew and Martha Ryburn on 23 Oct. 1870, the same date that Nellie was born according to her cemetery stone. The other possibility is that William was a twin who died young. However, this seems less likely as the event was recorded as a single birth and there is no entry under the name Nellie at all. Also, there is no evidence of a William on any census record for this family. Neither is there a stone for him in the cemetery with other family members.6,7
