Research Comment:

High On A Windy Hill reports the presence of a stone in Old Glade Spring Cemetery for a William H. Clark, 1794-1869. Because this entry is listed immediately before that of Barbara Clark (who is noted as the wife of William Clark) some researchers have assumed this was William Clark, husband of Barbara.

However that is incorrect. The Bible record below establishes that after Barbara's death William Clark married Harriet Shugart and moved to Tennessee. Numerous records (see William's page) establish that he died and was buried in Tennessee. The identity of the William who died in 1869 in Virginia remains a mystery to me, and to date his stone has not been located in Old Glade Spring Cemetery.10

Barbara probably spent the latter years of her childhood in this home her father purchased in 1807. Known today as the Old Stagecoach Inn, it probably consisted of no more than 4 rooms during Barbara's lifetime.12
