Marriage1 Apr 1858 He married first Sarah Jane Sutton on 1 Apr 1858 in Washington County, Virginia.2 
  James and Sarah appear to have had at least 4 children together during their marriage, including twin daughters born in December, 1858. At least one if not both girls were stillborn. And a son born August 1, 1867 died a few days after birth. Sarah herself died sometime between that baby's birth and November 1869.3 
Marriage16 Nov 1869 He married second Nancy Davis, daughter of James Davis and Nancy Smith, on 16 Nov 1869 in Washington County, Virginia.4,5 
16 Nov 1869 He was about 34 and she was 46. 
Cens-188017 Jun 1880  James and Nancy farmed land in the North fork district of Washington County. Their household also included James's surviving child from his first marriage, a son named John. Nancy's brother John and his family resided in the adjacent household as did Nancy's widowed mother.6 
  Nancy and James lived on a part of her father's old farm.7 
DeathApr 1896 James died of heart failure in Apr 1896 in Washington County.8
