Birth19 Sep 1816 Jackson D. Buchanan was born on 19 Sep 1816.4
Land-Quit8 Jun 1859 On 8 Jun 1859 Jackson and 4 of his siblings quit claimed their share in 44 acres of land to their brother-in-law Mahlon Susong. On the same day, Mahlon and his wife Mary E. (Buchanan) Susong quit claimed their share in the remaining 194 1/2 acres to Mary's 5 siblings. This represented a tract of approximately 238 acres on Baker's Creek in Washington County which had belonged to the siblings' deceased father.5
Cens-Sum Jackson remained single for many years, and while his mother Nancy was alive he made his home with her in Washington County.6,7,8
LegateeApr 1874  Nancy died in April 1864. Jackson inherited her personal estate, with the stipulation that certain items were to go to his siblings or to their children.3
Land-Quit17 Aug 1874 Four months after his mother's death Jackson entered into an agreement with his sister Martha and her second husband, John Keys. John and Martha were to clothe, nurse and care for Jackson during his lifetime. They also agreed to pay all his doctors bills and other medical expenses. In exchange Jackson conveyed to them his undivided share in the 237 acre tract of land formerly belonging to their deceased father. Jackson's share, besides that portion which he inherited directly, also included the share of his sister, Amanda Worley, which Jackson had previously purchased. In addition, Jackson deeded to Martha and John 2/7 of the undivided interest of his sister Minerva who was deceased.9
Cens-18807 Jun 1880 The terms of the 1874 agreement appear to have been met as Jackson was enumerated 6 years later in Martha and John's household. Though he listed his occupation as a farmer, he was also indicated as being maimed, crippled or otherwise disabled.10
Death15 Aug 1887 Jackson died of rheumatism on 15 Aug 1887 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 70.11,4
Jackson's date of death was recorded in the Washington County death register but was inserted out of order on the last page of 1887 deaths. The entry was listed just above the Commissioner of Revenue's certification dated 24 Jul, 1888. The informant was listed as "wife" but she was not named and remains unidentified to date.11,12
A conflicting date was recorded in the Hattie King Owen files at the Historical Society of Washington Co. This information, copied from his gravestone, says he died 13 Aug. 1857. However, he was enumerated on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses so the stone must have been misread.4
Burial He was buried at Old Buchanan Cemetery in Bristol, Virginia.4
