Three widely accessed sources, Early Southwest Virginia Families, the Ryburn notes of Dr. Littleton filed at the Historical Society of Washington Co. and the "Ryburn History" manuscript of Miss Peggy Shugart, incorrectly state that Jane Beattie Ryburn married Ryburn Buchanan. These same three sources also list their children as James, David and Bascom. These were actually the grandchildren of Jane Beattie Ryburn and James Hayter Buchanan (through their son Mathew). These sources frequently mirror each other in other details, both correct and incorrect, and were all compiled about the same year and in the same locality.
Cens-18501850 Jane and James appeared on the census of 1850 in Smyth County, Virginia. Their first child, a three year old daughter named Martha was also enumerated.13
A son arrived shortly after the official census date and hence was not recorded.
Cens-18601860 The family was next enumerated on the 1860 census where three children were listed with them: Martha O. 12, Mathew R. 10, and Mary Jane 4.14
A daughter, Minerva had been born in 1854 and died in 1855. Another child was also born to James and Jane, and died in infancy but his or her name is not known.
