Mary Love1

b. 28 February 1786, d. 13 July 1865
Birth28 Feb 1786 Mary Love was born on 28 Feb 1786 (calculated from the information on her death record and headstone) in Washington County, Virginia.2,3
Marriage11 Nov 1830 She married Beattie Ryburn, son of Mathew Ryburn and Jane Beattie, on 11 Nov 1830 in Washington County.1
Cens-18401840 Mary and Beattie had been married almost ten years when they were first recorded together on a Washington County census. Check marks in appropriate age categories indicate Mary's presence in the home, along with Beattie's children from his first marriage.4
Cens-18509 Aug 1850 The 1850 census was the first one to list the names of everyone living in a household. Beattie and Mary were enumerated, along with Beattie's daughters Martha, Amanda and Sarah. Beattie's two Hutton wards, Arthur and Francis, were also living with them.5
Not long afterwards, Amanda married Francis Hutton and Sarah married Arthur Hutton. Beatie's son William, as well as his nephew James (oldest son of Beatie's deceased brother Mathew) also lived on adjacent property.
Dower26 May 1851 On the day her husband's will was recorded in Washington County court, an order was also entered to assign Mary her dower lands. She received a little over 70 acres, plus the "liberty of any timber that she may need from the south end of the place, no timber to be unnessarily wasted or destroyed". Although the buildings all fell on Mary's dower lands, it was clarified that her stepson, William M. Ryburn was to have the house he occupied, as well as the south half of the old barns and other items. The deed described all the boundaries in detail, and stressed that certain paths or lanes were to remain open for the common use of both parties. The commissioners who assigned the dower were John Buchanan, Robert Clark and Arthur Hutton.6
Cens-186012 Jul 1860  However, it does not appear that Mary lived on her dower lands. She was enumerated on the 1860 census living with her stepdaughter, Sarah, and Sarah's husband Arthur Hutton.7
Death13 Jul 1865 She died on 13 Jul 1865 at age 79 of cholera, according to the Washington Co. death records.3,8
Burial She was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.9

Research Comment:

Extensive research by Carolyn Ryburn (a descendant of Beattie Ryburn) into will and deed records of Washington County, Virginia suggests that Mary was the daughter of William Love (d. 1814). Of interest is also the fact that William Love had a son John whose family Bible was located recently. Tucked among it's pages was Beattie Ryburn's obituary.10,11
