BirthCircabetween 1874 and 1877 Sallie Birdell McCamant was born at Granbury in Hood County, Texas, on Feb. 22nd or Feb. 23rd, between 1874 and 1877. Sally's date of birth was recorded as 22 Feb. 1875 on her death certificate and 23 Feb. 1877 on her headstone. Her age varies widely across census years: 1900: 23; 1910: 38; 1930: 54 and 1940: 55. Her older brother Alexander appears to have been born in 1872. Sallie's brother John's reported date of birth also varies, but was most likely 8 Apr 1876, making a Feb. 1877 birthdate somewhat unlikely for Sallie.4,1,5
Marriage20 Mar 1890 She married Elijah Emery Carter on 20 Mar 1890.3
Elijah was known as Lige and Sally was known as Bird.3
In the first years of their marriage Sally and Elijah lived in the vicinity of Jones and Taylor Counties in West Central Texas where Elijah worked for the T-Diamond Ranch.6
Cens-19006 Jun 1900  By 1900 they had moved onto the South Plains where they were enumerated in Crosby County, Texas. Elija was 45; his occupation was recorded as stock farmer and he owned his farm. "Bird"'s age was recorded as 23. She was noted to be the mother of 4 children, all of whom were living. They were enumerated as Ethel (9), Ruby (8), Inez (5) and Elija (1).7
Migration  In the late 1890s Sally's brothers Alexander and John left Texas and migrated into the New Mexico Territory, followed by Sally's brother Samuel.
Cens-191027 Apr 1910  By 1910 Sally and Elijah had also migrated further west. The 1910 census recorded them in Socorro County, New Mexico, where Lige (age 60) worked as a cattle herder. Sallie (38) was noted as the mother of 5 children, with 4 living, indicating another child may have been born after 1900 who did not survive.8
Widowed6 Mar 1912  "Liege" was killed in 1912 during a street quarrel at Magdalena in Socorro County.9
Cens-193014 Apr 1930  Sally made her home with her son Jack (Elijah Jr.) and his wife Naomi in 1930 . Although not entirely clear from the census record, they appear to have lived in or near Albuquerque.10
Cens-194019 Apr 1940  By 1935 Sallie was the head of her own household. The 1940 census indicates that she and her granddaughter Velma Magnum both resided in the village of Midway in Catron County [created from the western side of Socorro Co. in 1921] by the mid 1930s. In 1940 Sallie paid $5 a month to rent the home she and Velma (22) shared. The 1940 census asked each member of a household to report their highest level of schooling. Sallie had finished 5th grade; Velma had finished high school.11
Death18 Mar 1957 Sallie died on 18 Mar 1957 in Nutrioso, Apache County, Arizona, where she had been visiting for two days.3,2
Burial She was buried in Magdalena, Socorro County, New Mexico.2

Research Comment:

Gladys Dillard, a descendant of Sallie McCamant and Lige Carter, has researched the shooting that resulted in Lige's death. She located several newspaper accounts which are posted on her Ancestry tree ("Benjamin and Fewell Ancestors").
