Birth17 Feb 1834 James W. Jones was born on 17 Feb 1834 in Washington County, Virginia.1 
Childhood  James was the youngest child in a family of 7 children. His father died a few months before James' birth. The family remained on their farm in Washington County through 1850 after which they moved to western Tennessee, spending time on both the east side of the Mississippi River (Memphis, Shelby Co., TN) and the west side (Crittenden Co., Arkansas). 
Marriage15 Dec 1858 He married Nancy Jane Read on 15 Dec 1858 in Chicot County, Arkansas.2 
Cens-186015 Jun 1860  James and Nancy lived in Crittenden County after their marriage. The 1860 census recorded them with a 4 month old son named Boyd. James listed his occupation as "planter" and valued his land at $8,000 and his personal property at $5,000.3 
  James and Nancy's first son was named after Nancy's father. The couple named their second son William Edmondson Jones, after James' brother and grandfather. 
Death23 Apr 1862 James died on 23 Apr 1862 at age 28.1 
  His death appears to have been Civil War related. A James W. Jones enlisted as a corporal in Co. D. of the 23rd Arkansas Infantry on March 1, 1862 at Marion, Arkansas [Crittenden Co.]. He was discharged on April 4th, 1862 at Jacksonport, Arkansas on a certificate of disability.4 
Burial James was initially buried in Arkansas. 
Reinterred1876 However his remains were reinterred in 1876 in a family plot purchased by his brother Robert at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee. 
  Nancy married Bonam Houghton several years after James' death. She and the two boys lived in Texas where Bonam was a successful merchant. Nancy had two additional children with Bonam, both daughters. William E. Jones died in 1890; Boyd Jones died in 1899. They are buried with their stepfather Bonam (died in 1893) and mother Nancy (died in 1920) in a large family plot at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman (Grayson Co.) Texas.5,6
