BirthMar 1816 Mary Allison Beattie was born in Mar 1816 in Kentucky.3
Marriage16 Mar 1841 She married Andrew Jackson James, son of Daniel F. James and Eleanor Evans, on 16 Mar 1841 in Pulaski County, Kentucky.4
Cens-18501850  Mary and Andrew spent the first years of their marriage in the town of Somerset (Pulaski County) where Andrew was a busy young lawyer. By 1850 their family also included 3 children: John, Daniel and Eliza.5
Public Serv1855  In 1855 Andrew was elected to represent Pulaski County in the State Legislature.6
Cens-186022 Jul 1860  In the late 1850s the family moved to the state capital of Frankfurt in Franklin County where Andrew continued to practice law. In 1860 he owned land worth $7,000 and personal property worth $13,000. That year's census enumeration recorded 7 children with Andrew and Mary.7,6
Public Serv  At the time Andrew was also serving as Attorney-General of the state of Kentucky, a position he held for four years. In the late 1870s he also served for a year as Secretary of State.6
Cens-188010 Jun 1880  The 1880 census enumeration found Andrew and Mary living in Frankfurt with their daughter and son-in-law, Eliza and Chapman Todd.8
Widowed4 Apr 1883  Mary was widowed in April 1883 when Andrew died of tuberculosis at the family farm in Fayette County, Kentucky.9
Cens-19005 Jun 1900  She continued to make her home with family in Frankfurt. At the turn of the century Sarah was enumerated living with her daughter Sarah Chesney, who was also a widow. Their residence was at 220 Ewing Street in Frankfurt, near a bend in the Kentucky River. Sarah's two daughters and brother Campbell also lived with Sarah and Mary. Mary's census entry indicated that she was the mother of 8 children, only 6 of whom were living. This suggests Mary and Andrew had 2 children in addition to those listed below. They probably died young.3

Research Comment:

Sarah (James) Chesney was deeply interested in the history of her family. In 1896 she wrote a paper which was subsequently published by the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society. The paper dealt with Sarah's Edmondson and James ancestors, and though all of the content may not have been entirely accurate, she included personal memories shared by her mother, as well as by her grandmother, Sarah (Edmondson) Beattie.10
