Marriage He married Mary Holland.2 
Cens-185030 Aug 1850  Gardner and Mary's 1850 census household included 7 children ranging in age from 12 year old John to 2 year old Robert. In addition, a 30 year old male, John C. Grant, was present. He was employed as a merchant.3 
  Two daughters were added to the family during the early 1850s, however daughter Lucinda died in 1858. 
Cens-Sum  Gardner and Mary farmed land in the Abingdon District of Washington County. In 1860 they owned land valued at $4,000 and personal property valued at the same amount. The 1880 census household included son Holland [John P.?] who was a dentist, as well as son Robert and his wife Isabelle.4,5,6 
Death5 Dec 1895 Gardner died on 5 Dec 1895 at age 82.1 
Burial He was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.1
