Research Comment:

Elizabeth's brother, Richard Montgomery, died in 1863. He did not have children, hence his siblings or their heirs inherited his estate. Many of the heirs had left Virginia and were not easily located by Richard's adminstrators. In 1870 they filed suit in Washington Co. Circuit Court (see link below), asking for relief from the responsibility of managing money for heirs they could not locate. An affidavit was filed in the case by Nancy Fudge, who identified herself as the sister of Wilson Scott. The document also established that Wilson Scott married Elizabeth Montgomery, sister of Richard Montgomery "who died during the early part of the late war". Nancy Fudge also provided the names of Wilson and Elizabeth's 3 children.5

  7. [S16] It is not known who originally owned this Montgomery family bible. The script does not appear to be that of Richard Montgomery Sr., at least compared to his signature on his Rev. War. pension application. The pages containing family information were located tucked into the bible of Peter and Margaret (Montgomery) Clark. Margaret was a daughter of Richard Montgomery Sr..
