Birth21 Feb 1823 James Franklin Maiden was born on 21 Feb 1823 in either Augusta or Botetourt County Virginia. He was often called Frank.4,5,6,7
Childhood  Although James spent the bulk of his childhood in Botetourt County his parents moved the family south to Washington County in the 1840s.
Marriage20 Feb 1845 There Rev. James Franklin Maiden married first Mary Ann Dutton on 20 Feb 1845 in Washington County, Virginia.8,9
Cens-185011 Jul 1850  The young couple were enumerated on the 1850 census farming near William Maiden and Daniel Maiden [James's brothers]. Also in their home was 1 year old Sarah Maiden and 9 year old John W. Butt.10
John was the son of James's sister Eliza (Maiden) Butt, whose husband Richard was deceased. John was also enumerated in his mother's household later that summer.
Old account books suggest that besides farming, James may have operated some sort of mercantile business during his years in Washington County.11
Migration  James and Mary Ann, along with their first 2 children (Sarah and Eveline) moved to neighboring Smyth County in 1852 where they lived in a log house on land purchased by George Dutton. They intended to continue on to Missouri.11
Land-Buy22 Jul 1856  Instead, on Jul. 22nd, 1856 they purchased 122 1/2 acres near Holston Mills from John Rosenbaum.11
Cens-18608 Aug 1860 There they were enumerated in the summer of 1860. The family had grown to include 5 children: Sarah (10), Evaline (8), George (5), Emery (4) and Lucy (5 months).12
Although no occupation was given for James on the census, family records indicate that during this time James worked in a saw mill and also spent some time working for John Preston. Receipts from the era suggest he was also farming.11
Military  James served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Years later his widow would state that he was a member of the 48th Virginia Infantry [as were several of his brothers] however records suggest that he served in Company D of the 4th VA Infantry. He received a discharge on Feb. 28th, 1862.13,14
This was no doubt due to the death 4 days earlier of his 2 year old daughter Lucy; a son, 8 year old George had died 10 days before Lucy. James and Mary Ann had also lost a daughter, Susanna, in 1859. Two weeks after James was discharged from the army Mary Ann gave birth to their 7th child.
Cens-18702 Sep 1870  In 1870 James's occupation was entered as "carpenter"; he owned land valued at $1,500 and personal property worth $350. Besides Mary Ann the household also included 4 children: Emory (15), Victor (7), Charles (5) and Laura (2). Daughter Evelina had married Dr. Martin Houston the previous May. The young couple were also part of the household.15,16
Daughter Sarah had married in 1866. James and Mary Ann's 10th and last child was born in 1871.
Cens-18809 Jun 1880  Sometime during this period James undertook the responsibilities of a [Baptist] minister and was recorded as such on the 1880 census.17
Seven years later, when daughter Laura married William Britton (himself a minister) James would perform the ceremony.18
Widowed22 May 1888  Mary Ann died on May 22, 1888. Four and 1/2 months later James remarried.
Marriage8 Oct 1888 He married second Sarah Etta Slemp on 8 Oct 1888 in Sugar Grove, Smyth County, Virginia.19,20
James was 65; Ella was 22. She was younger than all but 2 of James's surviving children from his first marriage.1
Cens-19001 Jun 1900 Twelve years after their marriage James and Sarah were recorded living in the St. Clair District of Smyth County. James was 77; Sarah was 34. She was listed as the mother of 7 children, 6 of whom were living [son Samuel died in 1892 at less than 1 year of age]. They were enumerated as Robert (10), Wm E.G. (7), Virgie (5), Mary (3) and Ray (4 months).21
Death24 Nov 1903 James died of pneumonia on 24 Nov 1903 at age 80. He was remembered for his dedication to the churches he served.9,5,19,22
Burial He was buried at Riverbend Cemetery in Smyth County, Virginia.5
