Birth27 Feb 1825 Samuel Landis Maiden was born on 27 Feb 1825 in Botetourt County, Virginia.4,1
Childhood  Samuel spent his childhood in Botetourt County, one of 11 children who lived to maturity. Around 1843 his parents moved the family south and settled in Washington County on Mobley Creek, which became known as Maiden Creek.
Marriage He married Nancy Harriet Doran.5,6
Cens-185029 Jul 1850  Samuel and Nancy lived near Samuel's father when the 1850 census for Washington County was recorded. A 9 month old son, enumerated as Cornelius, was recorded with the couple.7
It is possible this child died young as no further mention of him has been found and Samuel and Nancy named their next child, born in late 1851, Cornelia.
Cens-186027 Jun 1860  The 4 children born after 1850 were recorded in 1860 as Amelia [Cornelia] (10), Mary (7), Robert (4) and Elizabeth (2). Four of Samuel's brothers, as well as their father were enumerated as the adjacent households.8
Samuel's descendants report that an additional daughter was born and died in the late 1850s.6
The year 1862 was a sad one for Samuel in several ways. His wife Nancy died in January and his father died in May. Another daughter, possibly born shortly after the 1860 census, died at age 2. However at the end of the year Samuel married for a second time.
Marriage3 Dec 1862 He married second Sarah A.V. Butt, daughter of Rignal Butt and Sarah Bondurant, on 3 Dec 1862 in Washington County, Virginia.1,9
3 Dec 1862 He was 37 and she was 35.
Military  During the Civil War Samuel served as a member of the 48th Virginia Regiment of the Confederate Army. Samuel suffered long lasting health problems from the war; among other problems he lost the toes on one foot to frostbite and lost the use of most of his voice. Unlike many returning soldiers he refrained from talking about the war and did not feel it was a good thing.10,9,11
Cens-188014 Jun 1880  By 1880 the only child from Samuel's first marriage still at home was his daughter Mary. However Samuel and Sarah's children Minnie (13) and Jessee (5) no doubt kept the house lively [Samuel and Sarah also had a daughter born in 1869 who died in 1870]. Samuel and Sarah were both in their early 50s in 1880, Sarah having been in her late 40s when Jessee was born.12
Death18 Apr 1896 Samuel died of typhoid fever, probably on on 18 Apr 1896 although his widow's Civil War pension application uses 17 April 1897. He was living at in Washington County at the time.4,13
Burial He was buried at Maiden Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4
