Name Other  Robert's name was recorded with a middle initial of "E" on both the 1850 and 1880 census. The 1860 census enumerated his name as Aikins. The correct spelling of his middle name was probably Eakins. 
Marriage He married Mary Mock.3 
Cens-185012 Sep 1850  Robert was enumerated on the 1850 census of Washington County, Virginia. He was a 28 year old farmer. Also recorded in the household were Mary (24) and Sarah (3).1 
Cens-18601860  In the months preceding the 1860 census enumeration, Robert and Mary left Virginia and settled in Claiborne County, Tennessee. There they were recorded with their growing family: Sarah (12), Ellen (9), James (5) and 2 year old twins John and Eliza. Robert's entry stated that he was a farmer.4 
Cens-188017 Jun 1880  The family appears to have stayed in Claiborne County as Robert and Mary were enumerated there again 20 years later. Three additional children had been added to the family after 1860: a son named Jefferson and what appear to be a second set of twins: Rachel and Virginia. When the census taker visited the household Mary was sick with consumption.5
