Marriage30 Aug 1866 She married John Claybourne South on 30 Aug 1866 in Washington County, Virginia.1 
Cens-187020 Sep 1870  Mary and John lived in Glade Spring township where they were enumerated in the fall of 1870 with 3 year old John and 1 year old Sarah.4 
Death7 Sep 1873 Mary died from a fever on 7 Sep 1873 in Washington County. She was 28 years old.3 
  John also died in 1873; family tradition states that he was shot during the Civil War and the bullet remained embedded, eventually causing his death. Mary Jane's mother, Sarah Larimer, cared for the children after John and Mary Jane's death. In 1880 she was enumerated with 3 South children in her home: John C. (12), Ida J. (9) and Mary J. (6). Sarah South was not listed and is believed to have died young.5,6
