Birth25 Apr 1846 Mathew Hays McCall was born on 25 Apr 1846 in Washington County, Virginia.3,4
Childhood Mathew grew up on his father's farm in Washington County. Mathew's mother died in 1855 when he was 9 years old and his father remarried a few years later. Eventually the family consisted of at least 15 children in which Mathew was the 4th born, as well as the 4th son.1,5
Marriage13 May 1869 He married Margaret Ann Hockett on 13 May 1869 in Washington County.3
Cens-188024 Jun 1880 A little over 10 years after their marriage Mathew and Margaret were enumerated in the Glade Spring district of the county. Mathew, at age 35, stated that he was employed as a laborer. Margaret was 29 and "keeping house". Also enumerated were their first 5 children: Bettie J. (11), Milton J. (7), Daniel R. [Robert](7), James K. (3) and John (4 months).6

Mathew was stated to be a farmer and Margaret's entry stated that she was the mother of 9 children, 6 of whom were living. Five of the 6 were recorded as part of the household. In addition, it appears that Mathew and Margaret were raising their 11 year old twin grandsons, Robert and Charles Farris [sons of their deceased daughter Bettie; the boys' father was also deceased].9
