Martha Ryburn Buchanan1,2

b. circa 2 February 1803, d. 4 June 1833
Birth-Calccirca 2 Feb 1803 Martha Ryburn Buchanan was born circa 2 Feb 1803, calculated from the information on headstone.2
Legatee29 Aug 1817 Martha was remembered in the will of John Buchanan, written in Washington County, Virginia, on August 29th, 1817. He wrote: "to Matty Ryburn Buchanan who now lives with me when she arrives at the age of 18, one horse of $50.00 value, and one saddle and bridle and one cow."1
Martha, or "Mattie" as she was known, does not appear to have been John's daughter, as he identifies his sons and daughters as such in his will. However, she was clearly someone who was important to him. The fact that her middle name was "Ryburn" and the fact that she was buried in the Buchanan family cemetery all suggest a familial connection of some sort.
1820  It appears Mattie was still in John's home when the 1820 census was recorded, which was consistent with the wording of John's will.3
Death4 Jun 1833 Martha died on 4 Jun 1833.2
Burial She was buried at Buchanan Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2
