Birthcirca 1842 Samuel T. Caldwell was born circa 1842 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Marriage15 Nov 1866 He married Margaret Ann Edmondson, daughter of John Lowry Glenn Edmondson and Margaret Jane Beaty Buchanan, on 15 Nov 1866 in Washington County, Virginia.1
Samuel and Margaret spent the first 15 or 16 years of their married lives living in the Holston District of Washington County. The 1880 census recorded Samuel's widowed stepmother as head of the adjacent household. Living with her was Samuel's 42 year old sister Jane who herself was widowed. She had been married to William Edmondston, Margaret's older brother. He had died a few years after the close of the Civil War.3,4
Religion10 Jun 1881 Samuel and Margaret were members of Rock Spring Presbyterian Congregation. They both signed the June 10, 1881 petition asking the Abingdon Presbytery to formally organize Bethel Church which had previously functioned under the umbrella of Rock Spring Church. Samuel served as one of Bethel Church's first Elders.5
At some point between the summers of 1881 and 1885 Samuel and Margaret headed west, spending at least some time in Nebraska where their daughter Elizabeth was born in May 1885. By the birth of son Charles in May 1887 they had settled in Kansas where they were enumerated living in Sherman County in both 1900 and 1910. Samuel may have followed in the footsteps of his older brother James and younger half brother Frank who were enumerated in Washington Co., Nebraska in 1880.6,7
