Cens-1910Apr 1910  He and Hassie lived in Kimball in McDowell County where James worked as a railroad engineer. It also appears that they may have run a boarding house as the 1910 census recorded 4 other railroad workers living in their home as well as 3 servants listed as cooks.4 
Divorcebefore 1920 He and Hassie Kiester were divorced before 1920.5 
Cens-192012 Jan 1920  Following the couple's divorce James moved back to Virginia where he rented a room in Petersburg. He continued to work as a railroad engineer.6 
  Hassie remained in Kimball, West Virginia with their 4 children. 
Cens-19302 Apr 1930  By 1930 son Harry was living with James in Petersburg. The 2 men were renting a home for $25 a month. James again reported that he was working as a railroad engineer while Harry was working as a lineman for an engineering company.7
