Burial | | He was buried at Brittain Cemetery in Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina, Two stones mark Thomas' burial place. The newer marker notes his rank as a Lieutenant in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War and bears the dates 1735-1780. The older stone, now very worn and difficult to read, carries the inscription:
Here lies the body of Lieutenant Thomas McColloch, belonging to Colonel Campbell's Virginia regiment, who lost his life in, and for the honorable, just and rightous cause of liberty, in defeating Colonel Ferguson's infamous company of banditti, at King's Mountain, October 7th, 1780.3,4 |
Will | | Thomas wrote his will on 9 Oct., 1780, two days after he was injured at King's Mountain. He no doubt knew his injuries were serious enough he would not survive the trip back over the mountains to Virginia. Thomas left his wife Isabel the land on which they lived and also remembered his children whom he described as oldest son John, second son Robert and 4 daughters: Rachel, Mary, Sarah and Martha.5 |
