Following their marriage James and Ellen settled in Washington County near James' father and stepmother. Their first 7 children were born in Virginia, including an infant born in late 1858 who does not appear to have survived.3,4
Migration  In the late 1870s James and Ellen left Virginia and migrated west.
Cens-188011 Jun 1880 They settled in the Richland Precinct of Washington County, Nebraska, where they were enumerated in 1880 with 7 children, including a daughter Loretta born about 1878 in Nebraska.5
James' half-brother Frank appears to have moved west with them, as he was enumerated in the same county in 1880 - working as a farmhand. Two of James' siblings, brother Samuel and sister Jane Edmondson, also appear to have spent time in Nebraska in the mid 1880s.
Another Washington County, Virginia family settled in Washington Co., Nebraska in the late 1870s. William Addison Butts was the son of Eliza Maiden and her first husband Richard Butts. Eliza married as her second husband, John Lowry Caldwell, a likely cousin of James Caldwell's father, John S. Caldwell.
