Birth1840 John W. Butt was born in 1840 probably in Botetourt County, Virginia.2,3
Ward23 Apr 1849  In April 1849 the Washington County, Virginia Court appointed William L. Maiden guardian of John and his siblings, noting that their father was deceased.1
John appears to have been enumerated twice in 1850, first in the household of his mother's brother James F. Maiden and secondly in his mother's household. The first entry, dated July 11th lists him as John W. Butt, age 9. He was recorded after James's 1 year old daughter Sarah, an indication that John was not James's child. John's mother's household was enumerated 2 months later. That record shows him as 11 year old John Butt. Although the age is not accurate it is consistent with the fact that everyone else in his mother's household, including his mother, was recorded about 2 years older than they should have been.4,5
However, it may also be important to note that there was another John Butt of about the same age in Washington County during this time. He too was recorded in 1850 and appears to be the son of Regnal Butt, born about 1835. Also living in the Regnall Butt household was 32 year old Jackson Bondurant.6
Then, in August 1860 a 24 year old John W. Butt was enumerated in the household of T. S. Stewart a 34 year old merchant in Washington County. Mrs. Rollins, in her The Maiden Family of Virginia and Allied Families, states that this is John, son of Eliza and Wesley. But is it? The age is more consistent with the John Butt listed in 1850 in the household of Regnall Butt. On the other hand, Mrs. Rollins notes that on 6 Dec. 1865 John, son of Eliza and Wesley, signed a release showing he received his share of his father's estate from his guardian William L. Maiden. So we do know that Eliza and Wesley's son was alive through at least 1865.7,2
High On A Windy Hill, p. 79, reports a headstone for a 1st Sgt John W. Butt, of Co. D, 1st Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States of America (no dates). Vol. I of Washington County, Virginia Cemetery Annotations, p. 145, states that John died in 1864 and was the son of Rignal Butt and Sarah Bondurant. It also states that John served with Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and died from being thrown from his horse.8,9
